Names of the Institutions
It is well known that Internet is becoming a major source of incorrect, imprecise, or misleading information. The comments below are written with intention to clarify the reasons for spelling of institutional names used on this page.
The University
Many web pages refer to the university as 'Saint-Petersburg State University'. This name is a direct translation of official name in Russian. However, it is somewhat misleading because the term 'state' in Russia usually means 'federal'. The university in question is actually federal, both in terms of reporting and funding.
The problem is now resolved in even more confusing way: both 'Saint-Petersburg University' and 'Saint-Petersburg State University' are legally valid names.
School/Faculty/Facultet
Similarly, many web apges, including official site, read the name as 'Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics'. However, the word 'faculty' has different meaning in English. It is not recommended to use the term 'school' because the word has different meaning in Russian. The word 'facultet' is a transliteration from Russian (borrowed from German centuries ago) and is considered more precise, although spell checker complains.
