The Department exists from 1932. During this time the Department's staff has obtained many distinguished results. Worldwide fame have the works on theory of numbers (Yu. V. Linnik), initial notions of homological algebra (D. K. Faddeev), the problem on fields embedding(A. V. Yakovlev), the problem of Serre and the algebraic K-theory (A. A. Suslin).
